More than just a project for Sydney, the NSW Government considers Barangaroo a site of State significance and will retain ownership and control to ensure that its renewal is managed for, and on behalf of, the public of New South Wales.
Whilst the challenges of renewing such a large and important site are significant, so are the rewards and opportunities for Sydney and NSW. Its successful renewal process will achieve the following outcomes:
ECONOMIC
- Revive this site's role as a trade gateway of the state and national economies by engaging with industries and commerce of the 21st century.
- Renew attention on Sydney and convert this into investment and jobs for NSW. The renewal will seek to attract new regional and global headquarters to Sydney.
- Leverage the next phase of Sydney’s economic growth, creating net investment and employment, with significant long term benefits to NSW.
ENVIRONMENT
- Create a significant new headland park on Sydney Harbour. Beyond the green space benefit to the CBD, this headland will be of regional significance, completing the reinstatement of an archipelago of green headlands of the western harbour, previously lost to industrial uses.
- Ensure that Barangaroo becomes a world benchmark in waterfront urban renewal and provides an important leadership example for the role governments can play in balancing economic with environmental and social responsibility.
- Seize this unique opportunity to create a sustainable city precinct from the ground up. The Concept Plan for the site was endorsed by the Minister in February 2007. It outlines principles and commitments in terms of water, power and waste technology, as well as environmental building and design excellence processes. The renewal will pursue the highest environmental return possible.
COMMUNITY
- Reconnect and restore this area of foreshore to Sydney's CBD. Re-establishing physical and social connections severed in recent history, opening the foreshore to the community and providing for one of the great social gathering places of our city.
- Return this area to a bustling and peopled waterline, activated by living, recreational and working activity, shared by both local and regional visitors.
- Create significant new recreational space and opportunities for Sydneysiders, both local and regional, allowing for opportunities for diverse age groups and lifestyles.
- Complete the Government’s Sydney Foreshore Walk – a 14 kilometre foreshore walk between Woolloomooloo and Anzac Bridge – a public amenity unrivalled in harbour cities worldwide.
